Every country here works for families. They just work differently.
Malaria-free safari, Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route, with short flights and excellent roads. The gentlest introduction for younger children.
The Mara conservancies, Amboseli, Laikipia and Samburu, finished on the Swahili coast. Wonderful guiding and a strong conservation story.
Big-scale wildlife in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, then barefoot days on Zanzibar. The archetypal safari-and-beach family trip.
The Okavango Delta, Chobe and the salt pans. Low volume, high cost and deliberately wild. Best once your family already has some Africa behind them.
Victoria Falls, Hwange's elephants and Mana Pools, with some of the finest guides on the continent at a friendlier price than its neighbours.
South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi for canoeing, walking and genuinely quiet camps, easily paired with Lake Malawi.
Dunes, desert-adapted wildlife, Etosha and the Skeleton Coast. Self-drive or fly-in, and endlessly interesting for older children and teenagers.
Bazaruto and the Quirimbas for snorkelling, dhow sailing and long, empty beaches after the safari days.
An hour from Kigali to the forest edge. Trekking is for ages 15 and over, but there is plenty for younger siblings alongside.
Bwindi's gorillas, Kibale's chimpanzees, the Nile at Jinja and lakes in between. Value for money and wonderfully varied.
