August
Zambia
The comfortable temperatures make walking safaris particularly appealing in Zambia in August. At Victoria Falls, the water levels are low enough for thrilling white-water rafting and visiting the iconic Devil’s Pool. During this time, expect pleasant daytime temperatures accompanied by clear, sunny skies, with little to no rain and low humidity. However, evenings can be considerably cooler. The dry conditions have led to excellent game viewing as the bush has thinned out, making it easier to spot wildlife congregating around the shrinking water sources. Fishing on the Lower Zambezi is also at its best from May to November as water levels recede.
Zimbabwe
August and September bring rising temperatures and warmer evenings. The comfortable climate makes walking safaris ideal, and wildlife sightings become more reliable as the vegetation continues to thin and animals gather around water points. The mighty Zambezi River attracts an array of animals, and canoeing safaris allow families to experience the park from a different perspective, gliding quietly alongside hippos and elephants. Trips can also be combined with White Water rafting near Vic falls.
Tanzania
The seasonal water sources begin to dry up, prompting game to congregate near the few remaining water points, making this one of the best times for game viewing. It’s also an excellent period to visit Katavi and Ruaha in Southern Tanzania, where large herds of buffalo often clash with lions. In the north, the Great Migration continues its journey to the northern Serengeti, with some herds moving into the Lamai Wedge and the Maasai Mara. Daily river crossings occur along the Mara River as the wildebeest and zebra seek fresh grazing.
Uganda and Rwanda
August is a peak travel month. Gorilla permits tend to sell out quickly, so early booking is essential. The warm and sunny conditions with high temperatures and minimal rain in the savannah parks create ideal trekking conditions, although there may still be some rainfall in the forested areas. The landscapes are lush and green after the rains, making this an excellent time for wildlife viewing alongside stunning scenery. This period is particularly prime for primate trekking, with fewer visitors than in July and August.
