Zambia
Zambia is best known for the mighty Victoria Falls, but beyond the spray and spectacle lie quieter corners filled with wild rivers, lush valleys, and wide-open spaces, perfect for families with older children seeking real adventure.
Two of Africa’s best wildlife destinations South Luangwa (in our opinion the most beautiful park in Africa) and Lower Zambezi, offer unforgettable family safaris, with animals gathering around rivers and expert guides leading you on foot, by boat, or on a game drive. For something wilder, head to Kafue or Liuwa Plain, where you’ll likely have the bush all to yourselves.
Millions of fruit bats darken the skies over Kasanka each November, and the Bangweulu Wetlands are home to the oddball shoebill stork, a guaranteed hit with young explorers!
Active families can walk, paddle, and even fly their way through Zambia. Glide over the Falls in a microlight, canoe the Zambezi past pods of hippo, or track wildlife on foot in the birthplace of the walking safari.
Best time to visit:
June to October for a safari
Why:
It’s sunny and warm, and animals congregate around rivers and waterholes, especially in the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks, making them easier to spot. The bush is less dense, improving visibility for game drives and walking safaris. While November marks the start of the rains and the end of peak safari season, it’s a magical time in Kasanka National Park, where millions of fruit bats fill the skies during their annual migration.
