January

Cape Town and the Garden Route, South Africa

January in Cape Town is summer at its finest. The windy “Cape Doctor” has mostly subsided, and post-Christmas crowds have dispersed, making it a perfect time for family beach days, exploring the Winelands, or driving the scenic Garden Route. A safari at Addo Elephant Park is a great add-on, especially since northern safari regions like Kruger and Madikwe are in their rainy season.

Tanzania

January is an ideal time for a trip to Northern Tanzania, with beautiful weather, clear skies, and stunning landscapes. It is the Wildebeest calving season, and going on safari at this time you are more likely to see baby animals than any other time. The wildflowers are in bloom, the birdlife is abundant, and the wildlife is thriving. Elephants are still plentiful in Tarangire, and the Ngorongoro Crater looks spectacular. For those seeking a beach extension, Zanzibar and its surrounding islands are perfect this time of year, offering excellent snorkeling and diving conditions, plus an array of fresh tropical fruits the children will love!

Kenya

Kenya’s short dry season runs from mid-December through March, making January an excellent time for family safaris. The post-Christmas lull means fewer tourists, tempting special offers, and warm, dry days for optimal wildlife viewing. While the wildebeest migration isn’t in the Mara, safaris remain a thrilling experience without the crowds. Along the coast, the water clarity is perfect for snorkeling and diving, and the Rift Valley bursts with birdlife. Families can also enjoy sunny beach days, with the chance to spot whale sharks!

The Maldives

The Maldives in January offers fantastic weather, with the least rainfall of the year—great for families looking for sun, sand, and sea. Clear waters make for excellent snorkeling and diving, and between December and March, dolphin watching is at its best. The calm seas allow playful dolphins to leap out of the water, creating unforgettable moments for kids.
