In 2010, soon after getting married, my husband James and I set off on an epic adventure—a road trip from London to Cape Town in a Land Rover Defender. Crossing through 23 countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, some thought we were crazy: “Why spend so long in the car? Why not just fly?” But we were committed to the journey.

The adventure was everything we imagined and more. From getting stuck in the only pothole in the Wadi Rum desert to navigating Sudan during a political coup, every challenge was matched by incredible moments. We experienced the solitude of Petra at sunrise, stood in awe before the Pyramids, witnessed the Serengeti’s migration, and felt the raw power of Victoria Falls at its peak. We met so many friendly people along the way and discovered just how breathtakingly diverse and beautiful this continent is.

After our journey, we made Cape Town our home, and have since explored more of Africa with our children, Sienna and Oscar (now 12 and 9). We’ve witnessed firsthand how these wild places have ignited their curiosity about the natural world, opened their minds to new cultures, and fostered a sense of adventure in both of them.
