OUR HIGHLIGHTS
Cape Town
If you’ve been to Cape town before you will know that there are many different areas to stay, all unique in their own way, and lots of different beaches to go to depending on the wind direction! Family friendly Noordhoek is by the beach, only 30 minutes into Cape Town and has a village atmosphere with beautiful sea views. The surfer village of Kommetjie is also great, where you can rent a house on the beach with what is arguably the most beautiful view in the whole of the cape peninsula. If you want a town vibe the More Quarters offers great accommodation for families, and to wake up near the penguins Tintswalo Boulders in Simonstown is fun for the kids.
Safari
For the ultimate Big 5 Safari the Kruger Park we love Thornybush in the greater Kruger, Ngala Private game reserve and Kirkmans camp in the Sabi Sand. They all have fascinating activities for children ages 3-12. Mokuru family in Madikwe is an excellent choice for a multigenerational get together in a malaria free reserve. We love Ants Hill in the Waterberg, especially for riding safaris and walking safaris. For another malaria-free safari, Ecca Lodge in the Kwandwe Private Game reserve of the Eastern Cape offer so many activities for younger safari goers, or the incredible Phinda Games Reserve in Kwazulu- Natal.
Active Adventures
Real adventure loving families can do a 4 day kayaking adventure down the down the Orange River which borders Namibia, spending days rafting rapids surrounded by beautiful, pristine scenery and nights sleep under the stars. Another favourite is the guided kelp forest Safari in Cape Town takes you to where My Octopus teacher was filmed. Hiking and biking in the beautiful Drakensburg Mountains, and a real family bonding experience is hiking the 5 day Otter trail (older children) along the beautiful garden route, or the wild coast beach trail horse riding trails is an epic adventure for older children.
Conservation experiences
You can get involved with darting, tracking and monitoring Rhino’s at Marataba Conservation Camps in the Marakele National Park in Limpopo, or join the research team at Phinda, one of the largest private reserves in the country, where you can participate in pioneering pangolin, elephant and Rhino initiatives. At Samara in the Karoo, your family can learn about and get involved in their incredible rewilding projects. Should you wish your holiday to be very conservation focused, you can take an African Sky Runnners Conservation safari, a two week journey flying in a private plane between reserves and assisting with six different conservation projects across south Africa.
Cultural experiences
Makusha-Mosholombi village homestay in Limpopo province, right in the North of the country. This will give your family an authentic African experience. The community of Makushu are warm hearted welcoming people and will host you in their village with love and excitement. When you visit a homestay in Makushu, your host family will take care of you and you will share in their day to day everyday life. In order for your and your children to understand the history of apartheid a cycling tour of Soweto is very educational and fun if you are in Johannesburg.
