Africa is, of course, well known for safaris and the opportunity of spotting the Big 5 from a safari vehicle. From our experience however, it’s often memories of the unique, hands-on, closer encounters with wildlife that linger – especially for children. Here are some interactive experiences in different countries to consider doing when coming to Africa with your family.

1. Meerkat experience in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi salt pans

Visiting the habituated meerkat family in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is is a bucket list experience for those coming to Botswana. Known for their charming antics and social behavior, meerkats offer an incredible opportunity for families to connect with wildlife in a fun and interactive way. You set out at dawn as they are waking up and coming out of their burrows and can spend time some time with them!

2. Spending a day on Boulders Beach with the Penguins in Cape Town, South Africa

Don’t miss Boulders Beach in Cape Town to see the famous African penguin colony. A firm favourite of our family, you can enjoy beach time whilst the penguins waddle along the beach and swim in the ocean.

3. Visiting the Wild Horses in Southern Namibia

On the way to the ghost town of Kolmanskop in Southern Namibia, there’s an area where wild horses roam. Believed to be the decendants of the German cavalry horses in 1900 which were abandoned during battles, over time they became wild and have adapted to be able to live in these dry, harsh conditions. They come and drink at a waterhole near the road most days. It’s a pretty magical experience seeing them.

4. Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in Tofo, Mozambique

Known as the gentle giants of the sea, whale sharks are the largest fish in the world, and encountering them in their natural habitat is an experience you’ll never forget. Tofo is renowned for its clear waters and abundant marine life, making it an ideal destination for snorkeling with whale sharks. Best to see them October – March but we saw them in July! You go out in a boat and all jump in when the guide has found one! It’s a truly thrilling experience.

5. Scorpion searching with a UV light in Namibia

Scorpion hunting with a UV light is a great activity – a recent highlight of a 8 year old guest after 2 weeks in Namibia! Some lodges offer guided walks at night. Armed with UV flashlights, you go on scorpion hunt. It’s great fun!

6. A Visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya

A visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi should be on the list when in Kenya. Its a renowned elephant orphanage, where you can meet and learn about rescued baby elephants. Daily feeding sessions provide a close-up experience with these incredible animals.

7. Leopard Tracking in Okonjima, Namibia

Join a guided tracking experience in Okonjima, home to the Africat Foundation, where guides use radios to track elusive leopards in their natural environment. This takes place in a vehicle (not walking!), it’s great fun and almost guaranteed sighting. Our children’s highlight on our last trip to Namibia!

8. Gorilla Trekking in Uganda/Rwanda

An unforgettable experience for teenagers is trekking to see the Gorillas. This activity typically takes place in the misty rainforests of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Its a unique adventure that leaves an indelible mark on all who participate (15 years and older)
