My Journey to Journey South

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved travel and adventure.

Growing up in the UK, my first taster of adventure travel was on a trip to Kenya aged 16 with some school friends. I can still feel the excitement of being somewhere so different to what we were used to – the smells, the sounds and the sights. We explored a lot of the country, including driving down the coast from Malindi to Mombasa due to missing our internal flight – which was a definite highlight! I loved the feeling of exploring the unknown.

Over the following years I would take every opportunity to experience somewhere new, the result being that by my early twenties I’d travelled to many countries and spent time living in Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Czech Republic. This was then followed by the epic road trip with my husband from London to Cape town in an old Land Rover Defender in 2010.

Like many people, in my twenties I “fell into” rather than chose my first career. In hindsight, working in foreign investment promotion served me well; as a newbie in the industry, I was offered the opportunity to continue to travel and then as I gained more experience it gave me flexibility to juggle the demands of work and a new family. That being said, whilst I’ve got no regrets, it did at times feel like a career choice driven more by practicality rather than passion.

So, at the end of 2023 I gave myself permission to turn the page and start a new chapter, one where I can combine my passions of travel and Africa into a business that I hope will bring joy to many.

Journey South crafts personalized road trips for families, couples or groups of friends who are keen to explore amazing areas of Southern Africa, stay in exceptional places, enjoy soul-enriching experiences and create lifelong memories together.

So as I start this new chapter, what are my hopes for Journey South?

I’d like to help clients experience the journeys and special places that I’ve had the privilege of discovering since living in South Africa over the past 14 years.

I’d like Journey South to try and make a positive impact, whether through the conservation-led lodges and experiences, or our commitment to carbon offsetting through reforestation activities with Greenpop.

Above all, I want Journey South to offer a unique, rewarding holiday experience where clients return home feeling reconnected with eachother and the natural world.

Looking forward to the journey ahead with you,

Polly
