Imagine embarking on a journey into the wilderness of Africa as a family, where children (and parents) can disconnect from digital distractions, bond with eachother and immerse themselves in nature. Such an adventure offers a unique blend of excitement, learning, and growth. From encountering wildlife to navigating unfamiliar terrain, these experiences can help children and teenagers build resilience and a sense of accomplishment.
Whether your family is filled with nature lovers, adventure seekers, or cultural enthusiasts, an adventure in Namibia has something special for everyone. Here are our top ten experiences that we can weave into your family trip that promise unforgettable memories for the whole family. You can do a lot of these in a two week trip.
- Get amazingly close to large numbers of animals on safari in Etosha National Park
This incredible national park lends itself perfectly to a self drive safari, where you can drive from waterhole to waterhole and marvel at the large number of all types of animals who convene together to drink. At some of the camps they have very active flood lit waterholes, so you can game watch throughout the night. - Leopard tracking experience in Okonjima
This was a true highlight of our last family trip to Namibia. You set off in a vehicle searching for leopards using radar technology, the excellent guide swings the radar from side to side and when a leopard signal is picked up it beeps. They also have an information centre so the kids can learn about the conservation of endangered species such as the leopard, brown hyena and the pangolin. - Kayaking with seals in Walvis Bay
This is a magical experience where you leisurely kayak amongst hundreds of Cape Fur Seals, getting up close and personal with them in their natural environment. You can also spot sun fish and dolphins if you’re lucky, and see pelicans, flamingos and cormorants flying above you. - Hiking in Spitzkoppe
Also known as the ‘Matterhorn of Africa’ Spitzkoppe is a breathtakingly beautiful collection of granite peaks rising dramatically from the surrounding plains. Depending on the age of your children, they can either scramble on the boulders on the ground or take a guided hike up one of the peaks. The views are spectacular. - Exploring the dunes of Sossusvlei on foot and from the air
A must visit place in Namibia where every member of the family will be blown away by this surreal landscape. A truly unique experience is taking a hot air balloon flight at sunrise and float over the magnificent dunes. - Learn the ancient skills of the San culture by the San themselves
Join the ancient San skills academy during a stay at the Harnas Guest farm where you’ll learn the secrets of the San from survival in the bush, traditional medicines, hunting techniques and animal tracking. At night you will join the San around their evening fire and listen to stories and tales about the stars, animals, galaxies and the universe. - Sleep out horse ride in the Namib desert
This is an amazing ride through the desert open plains to an overnight luxury tented camp, where you enjoy a night under the stars by the red dunes of the Namib desert. - Stargazing
Namibia has some of the darkest skies in the world. You can see the milky way in all its glory with the naked eye, but you can also join an astronomers ‘tour of the skies’ using a telescope to get a closer look! - Boating and fishing on the Kavango river
In the lush North of Namibia, you can enjoy mokoro boat trips on the Kavango river, or if you have keen fishermen in your family, there are Tigerfish, Bream and Catfish in plentiful supply. - Living Desert experience
Have you ever seen a dune lark, FitzSimons’ burrowing skink, Grant’s golden mole, dancing white lady spider, southern harvester termite, barking gecko or a Peringuey’s adder? Track them down and learn about these amazing creatures on a living desert experience in the Namib.
