Self-drive
For adventurous families seeking flexibility and freedom, a self-drive holiday is an ideal way to explore Southern Africa. South Africa, Namibia and Botswana each offer unique opportunities for family-friendly road trips, allowing you to set your own pace and have a journey of a lifetime.
South Africa
If you are looking for an action packed adventure with the family from Cape Town the Garden Route ticks all the boxes, driving through lush forests and beautiful coastlines, ending in Port Elizabeth, or driving back inland via the Route 62 winding through the Cape Winelands and Little Karoo. Another favorite is the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga, near the Kruger park, offering breathtaking views of the Blyde River Canyon. From Durban a great two week loop takes in the Drakensburg mountains, the Anglo Boer war battlefields, a big 5 safari and a beautiful beach break.
Namibia
Namibia is a self drive paradise with its vast and varied landscape. It has a great road infastructure, it is very safe and the sheer space, the stars and the otherworldly surroundings are incredible. In a two week self drive you’re able to take in the highlights of Namibia – the Namib Naukluft desert with its towering dunes, Swakopmond for some sea and adrenaline fueled activities Damaraland for its rugged beauty and desert adapted wildlife and Etosha national park for a world class big 5 safari.
Botswana
Botwana is a great self drive country for experienced 4×4 drivers. Adventurous families who wish to drive and camp can drive from Kasane in the North through the Chobe National Park, the Moremi national Park and the Okovango delta to Maun. Botswana campsites aren’t fenced so this style of travel isn’t recommended for families with small children.
